Sydney Thomas uses oil painting techniques developed by the Old Masters to capture the beauty of a particular moment in time, the grace of simple objects in our lives, the intimacy of faces that compel us.  Her use of underpainting and glazing gives her paintings a distinguishing depth and luminosity.  She studied with master painters, Numael and Shirley Pulido at their School of Classical Painting in Hancock, New Hampshire, and keeps in mind always their admonition that painting is above all about the arrangement of shapes -- or, as Clive Bell would have it, "significant form."
